It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye. Literally.

Hub Theatre Company of Boston will kick off its third season this spring with Joe Orton’s irreverent and amoral dark farce, Loot, at the First Church in Boston March 27-April 12.

Poor Mr McLeavy! It's the day of the funeral and his late wife won't stay in the coffin. The nurse - a seven-time widow - fancies him as her latest 'late' husband. His ne'er-do-well son and his 'special friend,' the undertaker, are pursuing new careers as bank robbers, and Mum's coffin looks like an ideal hiding place for the money. And a nosy representative from the Water Board - or so he claims - is asking some very probing questions and making everyone quite nervous indeed.

In this tour de force of bad taste, taboos, and high farce, nothing and no one is safe from Orton’s wicked wit!  Inspired by the trial of the infamous police detective Harold "Tanky" Challenor, notorious for his brutality and evidence planting, Loot satires police brutality, the Catholic Church, social attitudes toward death, and everything in between. This show will make you laugh but its message will resonate long after you leave the theatre.

Known for such works as What The Butler Saw and Entertaining Mr. Sloane, Joe Orton's life was as outrageous as his plays. Orton was born into a working class English family, was largely self-educated, and openly gay when it was still a felony in Britain. During his meteoric career he shocked, outraged, and amused audiences with his scandalous, sexy and cynical dark comedies. Although often most remembered today for his tragic fate, Orton’s plays were a vital part of England's cultural revolution of the swingin' 60's.
